CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES.

♦ — THE NEWS IN AUCKLAND, I NO PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION. I No public demonstration took place yesterday to mark Germany's acceptance of the armistice terms of the Allies, the request of Dr. J. P. Frongley, acting-chief health officer, that nothing should be dons J which would cause crowds to congregate | being observed to the letter The aspect of Queen Street was in j striking contrast to that presented on I Friday, when the premature news sent the whole city delirious with joy. The only public evidence .that the day was one of special significance was the liberal ; flying of flags, and even this was in some measure discounted by tho fact that at the Town Hall and other places the flags were half-mast in token of the death of Mr. M. Casey. In accordance with the request of the health authorities no general holiday was declared, and practically all the shops remained open through the day. The banks and most of the business offices were cloned, however, besides the Government* offices. The post and telegraph offices cloned from about ten o'clock in the morning until ten o'clock last sight, only in emergency staff remaining at work, and the soma measures were taken at the telephone exchange, where all but 18 of the attendants were dismissed for the day. Upon the receipt of the news, the Mayor, Mt. J. H. Gunson, despatched tho following telegram to the Prime Minister :— " Upon behalf of Auckland citizens, I desire to convey to you an assurance of deep appreciation and thankfulness for the great national work which the Government under yourself and Sir Joseph Ward has accomplished- To its single-minded patriotism and devotion to duty our people owe much. On behalf, therefore, of our citizens I congratulate the National Government upon the cessation of hostilities, bringing as it does inestimable personal relief from anxiety to thousands of New Zealand homes, and security generally to our people. Mv deep regret is that our community at this time should be prevented by widespread influenza from immediately suitably observing the occasion, which will be done in Auckland as soon as circumstances become favourable." At the Stock Exchange c'-.eers were given for the King and for "our Allies" at the morning call. It was. agreed that the exchange should observe any holiday announced later by Government proclamation in connection with peace celebrations. When the news was received in Auckland all the vessels in port were decorated with : streamers <J flags. Cirgo operations on the vessels were suspended, and at, 1 p.m. practically every vessel in the port was idle. The cessation of work will cause the departure of several vessels to be delayed.
