THREE DAYS' PROHIBITION, AN EPIDEMIC MEASURE. Acting oa instructions from the acting, chief health officer, Dr. J. P. Frenglev" the police yesterday served notices on ail hotels and clubs in the Auckland health' district, ordering the closing of all barn for three entire days. This order superseded the previous one, which norrmtted. the sale of liquor between I and 2 p.m. Referring to the matter last evening Dr. Frengley stated that his action in the first instance was intended to prevent las close contact of possibly infected person* with those who arc well. He was also endeavouring to prevent the excessive us a of alcohol at the present time. He bad | ,taken a successive series of 77 deaths from influenza and its complications, as registered with the registrar of deaths at Auckland, and had found that of these 51 were males and 26 females. He did not suggest that stimulants were not required for influenza or pneumonia patients; this was a. matter in which the patient Mould accept guidance from his medical attendant. He did hold, howeFv?r, {hat pneumonia of any type is a very fatal illness' among those who are addicted to tai» alcohol in excessive quantities.
