TOTAL OF PRISONERS ON THE PIAVE REACHES 32,000.
BRILLIANT FEAT OF CROSSING RIVER UNDER FIRE Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, Oct. 80. The number of prisoners captured in the Piave battle has now increased to 32,000. The enemy retreat is threatening to turn into & rout. The British and Italians, after occupying the islands of the Piave near Grave di Papadopoli, waded the river, and with great fury continued the charge, clearing the first line of the enemy from the other bank. The Italians' right wing waded breast deep under heavy fire, bearing machine-guns and grenades. Despite a stern defence the Bersaglieri, rallying to bugle calls, swept all before them. HOME. Oct. SO. The fording of the Piave was a great feat. The river was swollen, and the current violent, while tain fell in torrents. The stream was 100 yds wide, the first storm troops crossed by boats to assist in the construction of bridges. These were built five times, and every time were destroyed by enemy artillery.
