, PROTEST AGAINST EXEMPTION. . *• [Br TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Associated Chambers of Commerce to-day disfcussed three remits on the question of war loans, and resolved, " That tliii conference affirms the principle that war loans should not be issued free of taxation ; that the matter be referred to a special committee to immediately frame a resolution upon the subject; and that, thereupon, tho executive urge tho Minister for Finance to give effect thereto. The following remit of the Canter bury Chamber of Commerce was passed" That the Government be recommended to fort!r*ith appoint a Royal Commission or arrange for a conference to inquire into tho proper principles and incidence of taxation in New Zealand, and to make recommendations as to all taxes, whether direct or indirect, to be levied for the year commencing April 1, 1919. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. W. Gow (Dunedin); viceprosident, Mr. James McLellan. (Wellington); executive, Messrs. Robert Burns (Auckland), R. L. Paterson (Napier), J. B. Waters (Dunedin), and C. H. Hewlett (Canterbury).
