i4»;' / v ? % ; ' TRAGEDY IN NEW BRITAIN. A. and N,Z, . •\SYDNEY, Aug. 12. An Island steamer reports the murder of two: white traders in one of ; the outlying islands of the New Britain Group. The victims ] were surrounded by a horde of savages ' and 'butchered, their bodies ' being cooked and eaten. The natives' concorned showing : further/ signs vof hostilities, a punitive expedition was despatched, and surprised a well-armed force of natives. A desperate encounter resulted :in 60 natives being shot and . others / taken prisoner. The expedition visited a second village and punished the murderers there.
