FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR.
ANNIVERSARY OF OUTBREAK. To-day is the 48th anniversary of the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war. For somo time the French Emperor, Napoleon • T T., had been alarmed over the greatly ii. : cased power of Prussia through its successful wars with Denmark in 1864 ano\ with Austria in 1866. Towards the close of June, 1870, there arose the Hohonzollern incident, which added further to the alarm and distrust felt by tho French. The Crown of Spain was offered by the Cortes to Princo Leopold of Hohenzollern, who was connected with the Prussian dynasty. Tho prince at first accepted the crown, but later refused it. The French Government demanded a guarantee that the offer would not be repeated, but this demand did not meet with the approval of the Prussian Government. Bismarck, the Prussian Chancellor, ?>ho had been secretly preparing forwwatr t which he desired for trie purpose of bringing about the consolidation of the Empire as a military power, caused to be despatched from Ems the telegram that inflamed the French peoplo, and forced the declaration of war. This telegram stated—what was afterwards proved to be false—that King William of Prussia had insulted the French Ambassador.
