BRITISH RAIDS DEMORALISE ENEMY ON LYS FRONT.
HIGH COMMAND FORCED TO RESORT TO THREATS.
CASUALTIES SINCE MARCH 21 ESTIMATED AT 800,000Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. Julv i.
The correspondent of the Morning Post on the British front states that the Germans in the Lys area arc so demoralised by repeated British raids that certain divisions are in disgrace. The high command threatens severe punishment if more ground is lost. Prince Franz of Bavaria inspected the men and talked very seriously of the extraordinary state of affairs existing in the front line. He said that the constant British raids at night and the losses of Germans were becoming a scandal. The Germans must strengthen their positions and make more use of their rifles.
The Germans replied that it was all very well to talk, but it was impossible to strengthen the defences, as the men were continually shot by the British, who had the observation.
Reliable observers estimate the German casualties at 800,000 since March 21.
