SHIPPING REQUISITIONED.
SCHEME IN AUSTRALIA. FARES TO BE INCREASED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Mar. 18. Rear-Admiral William Clarkson has been appointed Controller of Shipping under tho new board of management of inter-State shipping, whereby all coastal vessels are commandeered by the Government at British Blue Book rates, in order to relieve vessels for oversea trade. Freights and fares will probably be raised 10 per cent. The Federal Premier, Mr. W. M. Hughes, announces that under the scheme coastal shipping will be run as one concern under the direction of tho Controller of Shipping. The regulation empowers the Federal Government to requisition any prescribed goods.
