SOUTH AMERICAN REPUBLICS BREAK WITH GERMANY.
URUGUAY AND PERU TAKE DEFINITE ACTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, Oot. 7. Uruguay has broken off relations with Germany. WASHINGTON. Oct. 7. Reports. from Lima state that relations between Peru and Germany have been formally severed. Reutor (Received 11 p.m.! MONTE VIDEO, Oct 7. The President of' Uruguay, in a message to Congress, said: " Although Uruguay has not received direct injury from Germany it is necessary to show solidarity with the champions of justice, democracy, and the small nations." The Peruvian Senate on August 8 passed a resolution expressing the sympathy of Peru with the motivo of the United States, as declared by President Wilson, for participating in the European conflict. The German Government offered to submit the circumstances of the sinking of the Peruvian barque Lorton to a prize court for adjudication. The Peruvian Government refused the offer, declaring that the sinking of the Lorton was unjustified and insisting that the German Government pay for damages and make an indemnity. The Lorton was sunk by a German submarine on February 5 inside Spanish territorial waters. On February 8 the Government made a demand upon Germany for reparation and indemnity and for the punishment of those responsible for the sinking of the barque. On February 15 Germany replied to the Peruvian protest and announced that an investigation was under way. a N *
