MAORI DICTIONARIES.
Sir,—ln t|a interesting article on " Maori Dictionary Making ' by Mr. Burton in the Herald supplement of September 22, tiere appeared the statement that "Dr. Mnmsell had himself intended to compile £ dictionary, but abandoned his project Jwing to tho loss by fire of the material ho had collected." This in erroneous. as I happen to have in my possession aif Maori dictionary compiled by Dr. Main sell and bearing his signature "R. MBunsell, November 16, 1843." It is entitled " Dictionary of the NewZealand Language," and bears the im?rint df "|ho Church Mission Press, 'aiMa," This was given to me by my uncle, Revs George Maunsell, a Maori scholar," wljo had received it from his father, thefcehdeacon. R. J. Coaxes.
