NEW ZEALAND FROZEN MEAT.
LONDON PRICES TO CONSUMERS. | The difference between the prices paid for New Zealand meat by the consumers in Britain and the prices paid to the producers was commented on by Mr. S. J. Ambury at the annual meeting of shareholders of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company yesterday. He said a cablegram dated London, Sept-ember 17, read : — "The Agent-General of Queensland has distributed 26,000 tons of Australian, Mew Zealand and Canadian cheese among 150,000 retailers, who will show the State of origin. The scheme has proved a splendid advertisement and it is believed will prove successful. The Minister in Charge of Food Control contemplates dealing" in a similar manner with other dairy produce." We might reasonably ask, said Air. Ambury, why meat not required for the army cannot be dealt with on similar lines, and a limit put on retail prices. We are obtaining reasonable prices for meat under the Government purchase scheme and we should be satisfied if the consumers of our meat in the Old Land were paying only fair prices, which is not the case. The difference between the first cost and the price the consumer has to pay is too great, and there are good grounds for suspicion that the profits find their way into wrong channels.
