DECREASE IN MARRIAGES

FIGURES FOR SIX MONTHS. BIRTH-RATE INCREASING. The vital statistics for the. Auckland registration district for June show a decrease of 13 births, as compared with the corresponding month of 1916. The deaths show an increase of eight. In marriages there was a marked fall last month as compared with June of last year, the decrease being 35, or about 25 per cent. For the past half-year, as compared with the first six months of 1916, there also was a decrease in marriages of just over 20 per cent. This decrease, no doubt, is attributable to circumstances, arising out of the war. The details for the past month are as under, those for June, 1916, being in parentheses: — Births ... A comparison of the first sis months of the present year with the equivalent period of last year shows an increase of 90 in the births and a decrease of 148 in marriages.
