AUCKLAND'S V.C.
ENCOUNTER WITH ENEMY SHIP.* Private letters received by the relatives of Lieut.-Commander Sanders, the Aucklander who has just received the Victoria Cross, give some indication of the deed which probably won him his decoration. At the time of writing, early in May, he had just returned to port, and the letters state that the ship which he commanded was completely smashed and crippled as the result of an encounter with an enemy ship, which he engaged at a range of BO yards, and succeeded in sinking, some of the crew, however, being rescued. In the engagement, Lieut.-Commander Sanders escaped injury, bat had two holes driven through his hat, and one in the side of hie coat.
