FURLOUGH FOR WAR WORN SOLDIERS.
Sir,— proposal of the Minister for Defence in Australia to relieve soldiers who have borne the heat and burden of the day should be taken to heart by the New Zealand authorities.
Judging from local conditions our conscription law is practically a failure. The district from which I write has, up to date, contributed its quota voluntarily, with the result that practically all the fit young men left are of the class that will neither work nor want. Squads of them can be seen loafing round the hotels, billiard-rooms, and racecourses. To such a course of military discipline would convert a fair proportion from hoodlums to men, a decided gain to themselves and country. It is manifestly unjust and unfair that this state of affairs should bo allowed to continue while we still have on active servico men whose date of enlistment dates back to August, 1914. Gaixipou.
