FRANCE RESTRICTS IMPORTS
SAVING SHIPS AND MONEY. FINAL FACTORS IN THE WAR. A. and N.Z. Cable. PARIS. March 26. A decree prohibits the importation into Franco and Algeria of merchandise except on behalf of the State, or of goods specially authorised by the Minister for Finance. M. Ribot, the Premier, states that each country in the alliance must become, as far as possible, self-supporting. The war has become very largely one of transport and finance, and any measure saving tonnage and restoring exchange brings victory nearer. Hie Government intends to encourage the homo production of foodstuffs. France during 1916 spent £600,000,000 abroad, the imports exceeding the exports by £400,000,000 sterling.
