COST OF ELECTRICITY.
•» ■* AUCKLAND AND CHRISTCHURCH. It was recently claimed by the city electrical engineer of Christchurch, in answer to a statement made by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. H. Gunson, that the average price of electrical power in Christchurch was 14 per cent, lower than Auckland prices. On this point Mr. Gunson sends the following memorandum : — The statement I made at the opening of the electrical'sub-station was correct, and the figures there given can bo substantiated. The Christchurch figure quoted by me was taken from the last published report of the Christchurch City Council—page 36— and represented the average price of the total units sold in each case. The figure given in the paragraph referred to in your issue of March 19 by the city electrical engineer of Christchurch is the average price obtained for power, exclusive of lighting. This figure for Christchurch was 1.82 d per unit, whereas in Auckland our average price for power for the past year was 1.28 d per unit. This question has been carefully considered, ana the figures quoted bv me are furnished by the city's electrical engineer, Mr. Alexander Wyllie. Reference to the published accounts of both corporations will show the relative positions to be as indicated above."
