WORLD'S FOOD SHORTAGE.
SCARCITY OF POTATOES. LABOUR AND AGRICULTURE. A. and N.Z. Cable. ' LONDON. March 8. Speaking in the House of Commons, Captain Bathurst, of the Food Control Department, said that there was unprecedented world - wide scarcity of potatoes. It was unlikely that there would be sufficient in Britain for the late spring and early summer. There was no evidence that farmers were unreasonably withholding stocks. Mr. R. C. Lambert, Liberal member for North Wilts, complained that the said withdrawals of labour from agriculture were so great as to result in a serious diminution in food production. The people at the War Office apparently knew nothing about agriculture. Companies of soldiers as substitutes, were unsatisfactory. Farming could not be done by numbers. HOLLAND LACKS BREAD. NO EXPORTS TO BELGIUM. (Received 7 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, March 6. Owing to a shortage of bread Holland has prohibited export to , Belgium.
