ENEMY'S ATTEMPTS TO APPROACH SOUCHEZ FAIL. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 8. A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: " The artillery has been active on both sides in several places along the front. In particular, we effectively bombarded the enemy east of Lesboeufs, on both sides of the Ancre, and east of Neuve Chapelle. The enemy heavily shelled Tpres. Yesterday a number of enemy batteries were effectively engaged by our artillery with the co-operation of aeroplanes. We repulsed three enemy attempts to approach our lines south-east of Souchez." A French communique states: " There has been a lively artillery duel on the right bank of the Meuse."
