RUSSIAN SUCCESS ON THE RIGA FRONT.
STRONG ATTACK WEST OF THE RIGA-MITAU ROAD. GERMANS ADMIT THE LOSS OF GROUND. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Rewired 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 8. A German communique states: "The Eussians strongly attacked west of the Riga-Mitau road, and extended their gains of the sth inst. on the Aa River." A later German communique states that there is a lively artillery 'duel near Riga. A Russian communique states: "We captured a village northwest of Tirul swamp and trenches south-west of Lake Babit, on the Pvinsk front. We repulsed fierce counter-attacks, and drove back columns southward of Krovo."
