THE CANTERBURY' NOMINEES.

[BT TELEGBAFH.—OWS COTtBXSPONBEST.J CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. Of the two Rhodes scholarships candidates nominated by Canterbury College, I eman A. O. Ponder is a son of Mr. A. R. Ponder, of Rugby Street, Merivale. He was born in Christchurch 22 years ago, and was educated first at the Normal School, where he won junior and senior scholarships, and later at the Boys' High School, he was the male candidate scoring the highest number of marks in the examination for the first university scholarships. Since then, and up to the time of hi 3 enlistment in June, 1915, he had a very distinguished career at Canterbury College. He went to the from, as a member of the New Zealand Rifle Erigade, and the last news that his parents had of him was that he was at Boulogne suffering from a strained cartilage in the knee. Mr. R. J. Richards, who is 25 years of age, is the son of Archdeacon Richards, oi Invercarzill. He was educated at Christ's College, and was there seven years altogether. During the last two year he was head prefect, captain of the cricket and football teams, and captain of the cadet company. . He left Christ's College to go to Canterbury Collcze, and finished up there by taking his B.A. decree, and obtaining a senior scholarship in (Jreek. He represented the college in cricket and football. In running at the university tournament in 1915 he gained the championship in the 440vds hurdles. Mr. Richards's two elder brothers were both killed on Gallipoli.
