CLOSING OF A ROAD.
PROTEST FROM MANUREWA.
The desire of a number of settlers in the Manurewa district to secure the cancellation of the decision to close the Weymouth Road at Manurewa was represented yesterday to the district railway engineer, Mr. D. T. Mcintosh, by a deputation comprising the chairman of the Manurewa Town Board, Mr. T. J. Corin, other members of the same board, Mr. H. E. Pacey, managing director of the New Zealand Dairy Association, Mr. A- A. White, and several residents of the district affected.
It was stated that the road in question had been open for about forty years, and that to close it,, as proposed, would curtail the means of communication considerably, and increase the distance traversed in reaching the creamery by about half a mile. It was asked that in order to keep the road open the Department should build a bridge near the railway station, or contribute to the cost of such bridge. Reference was made to the agreement arrived at about eighteen months ago between the Railway Department and the Manukau County Council and the Manarewa Road Board, under which the Department was now erecting a bridge on the Station Road, and closing the Weymouth Road. The deputation .stated that 'his agreement had been made without the ratepayers being consulted. Mr. Mcintosh stated that the Department already was building a bridge on the Station Road, in accordance with the arrangement, with the local bodies. A second bridge, which would be barely ten chains away, could not be built unlens 'be residents paid the cost of it. He .stated, however, that he would forward the deputation's representaiions to the head office of the Department.
