RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS.

AUCKLAND CANDIDATES. TWO SELECTED THIS YEAR. The Auckland candidates for the Rhodes scholarships have been selected in the; persons of Mr. W. J. Piatt and Mr. H. ( E. Reynolds,' there being this year two vacancies. Mr. Piatt is 19 years of age. His athletic record is a good one. He has played ill representative football for the Auckland Province, ho was in the first fifteen of the Auckland College, and is generally supposed to bo the best three-quarter back in Auckland. An excellent cricketer, he was also in the college first eleven. Mr. Piatt has had a great deal of experience in the Grammar School cadets, where he was colour-sergeant. In the life of the University College he has taken prominent part, being to the fore in the various college societies. He was in the competition for oratory, and in the winning team for the Athenaeum Cup offered for debate. Mr. Piatt was also prominent in the' Christian Union and in the Students' Association. His scholastic record is excellent. He is a senior national scholar, and, being only a second year student, he has passed the first section of his Bachelor of Arts degree. In his term examination he won distinction, gaining a premium in French. Mr. Reynolds is also 19 years of age. He is a versatile candidate, having a good scholastio record, being a good speaker, and a capable cricketer and hockey player. He has appeared in the college teams. Besides this, he is a good swimmer, and he was one of the winning team in rifle-shooting. He has also passed his theoretical examination for a commission. One of the most popular students in the college, he is on the executive of most college societies. He is a strong debater. Like Mr. Piatt, he belongs to the Christian Union. Mr. Reynolds is a junior university scholar, au<l was second on the list. Both candidates intend to enlist for active service on coming of military age.
