AUSTRIAN ADMISSION OF LOSS OF TRENCHES.

ATTEMPT TO MINIMISE ITALIAN VICTORY t * Australian and N.Z. Cable, (Received 5 pjn.) AMSTERDAM, September 16. An Austrian communique says: "The Italians opened a new offensive, chiefly directed against our positions on, the Carso Plateau. Their artillery and mine fire increased to greater violence, and strong infantry forces, in dense formation, attacked our whole front between Wippach and the sea. The fighting was fierce, and although the enemy penetrated parts of our first line trenches, maintaining the ground here and there, the first assault must be regarded as a failure, We repelled attacks westward of Fleims Valley, taking prisoners."
