Mil Jackson Palmer, Jndg» of ffi» Native Land Court, left Auckland yesterday by tho night express. Mr. J. S. do Beer, of Dunedin, is at present on a visit to Auckland. He is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. J. H. Quilliam, of New Plymouth, arrived in Auckland on Saturday. He is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. T. N. Brodrick, of Wellington, is at- present on a visit to Auckland- and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. C. E. Matthews, inspector of prisons, arrived in Auckland yesterday morning. Hii is staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. H. Jowett, clerk of the Native Court, Samoa, arrived at Auckland yesterday, on furlough, by the Talune. The Nelson Presbytery has received the resignation of the Rev. James H. McKenzie, to take effect from November 30. The Rev. R, Page, of Tonga, chairman of the Methodist mission there, arrived by the Taluno yesterday, en route for Sydney.. Lieutenant-Colonel E. E. Porritt, of Wanganui, who has been on relief service in Samoa, arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Talune. Mr. J. Ker&lake, governor of the gaol, Samoa, was a passenger to Auckland by the Talune, which arrived yesterday. He is on short furlough. Mr. L. F. Ayson, chief inspector of fisheries, is at present on a visit to Auckland on Departmental business. He is staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. P. C. Corliss, Commissioner of Stamps, arrived in Auckland yesterday morning from the South on Departmental business. He is staying at the Star Hotel. I Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Hume, inspector of artillery and officer commanding the Wellington military district, left Auckland last night by the Southern express. Dr. F. Fitehett, Public Trustee, accompanied by Mrs. Fitehett, arrived from Wellington on Saturday afternoon by the Main Trunk express. they are staying "at Glenalvon. Mr. S. J. Smith, private secretary to Colonel Logan, of Samoa, was a passenger to Auckland by the Talune. After a short stay in New Zealand, he will resume his duties. At the conclusion of the business of the Thames Licensing Committee on Friday a vote of sympathy with the chairman, Mr. F. Burgess, S.M., in connection with tho death of his son, who was killed in action at the front, was passed. The Rev. R. W. Copeland, of tin Methodist mission, Samoa, returned, with Mrs. Copeland, to Auckland by the Talune, which arrived yesterday. Mr. Copeland has spent four years in Samoa, his last charge in New Zealand being in Temuka. Mr. Harold Gregson, who has been appointed judge of the musical section of the Dunedin competitions, left for the South by the Main Trunk express la.*t night. Mr. Ernest Lilly will preside at l the organ in St. Pauls Church during I Mr. Gregson's absence. The Hon. Alfred Deakin and Mrs. Deakin, who arrived in Auckland from Sydney by the Makura on her last trip, on a brief holiday visit to New Zealand, left Wellington by the steamer Riverina for Sydney on 'Thursday last. Their visit to the Dominion was shortened by the receipt of news of a private nature which rendered their sudden return to Australia desirable.
