MUNICIPAL EXPENDITURE.
Some comment on municipal expenditure and the increase in rates was contained in a letter received last night by the City Council from a Franklin Road resident, Mr. J. E. Edgar. The writer said his sympathies were with members of the council who had protested regarding the liberal way in which ratepayers' money was being expended. He said the consequence was that the rates were going up in war time, when "every penny people can give is wanted for the relief of our wounded, and to carry on the war. Some of the ratepayers had been wondering when the council will cry a halt," continued the writer. " Parks are to be enlarged in some places where not 50 people per week go, except footballers. This enjoyment could easily be dispensed with while ' the cream of the country' is suffering for us in the trenches. Sport should be put to one side. It only encourages shirkers to stop at home and enjoy themselves while the good men do their duty. It the council has money to spare, let them give it to the workers who are depending on it, instead of dismissing them in these times of distress." The letter was rei ceived without discussion.
