THE UNIVERSITY SITE.
Ax appeal to the City Council to "consider well before consenting to the Metropolitan Grounds being used for any other purpose than was originally intended, namely, for Government House and grounds," was received at last night's meeting' from Mr. Charles W. Greenwood, of Warkworth. The writer stated that he was the son of an old pioneer, his father having been the builder of old St. Paul's Church in 1841. "The old Government House was the residence of New Zealand's first Governor, Hobson, and there are so many historic and old-time memories associated with those strenuous and unsettled times which cling to the old place that I feel," said Mr. Greenwood, "that it would be not only sacrilege but a great injustice to deprive the City of Auckland ,of her birthright. It seems to me a i strange thing that in a city like Auckland there is only one spot some people ! can see as suitable for a university site. I think that we old Aucklanders should stand together as one man to oppose such an injustice being done as to allow the old historic spot to be filched from us." The letter was formally received.
