FIREMEN AT THEATRES.
QUESTION OF MATINEES. The question as to whether lessees or proprietors of picture .theatres in Auckland should have a fireman stationed on the building during matinee performances, was discussed at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Fire Board. The opinion was freely expressed that it was an urgent necessity to have a fireman in a building at all times, but it appeared that the board had no by-law affecting the point, it being almost out of the board's province, the licensing authority, in this case the Auckland City Council, being the party deemed to have control over such a matter. The council has a by-law which stipulates that a fireman shall attend every performance— by-law does not differentiate between evening or matinee per-
formances—that is attended by 500 people and over. Mr. P. M. Mackay stated yesterday that the matinees in some of the suburban theatres were better attended than some of those in the city. He said that children very frequently attended matinee performances unaccompanied by their parents, and in case of a fire there would probably be a very disorderly stampede. It was eventually resolved to draw the City Council's attention to the matter.
