FIFTY YEARS AGO.
SHIPPING OF THE COLONY. \ (From the HERALD of August 25. 1866).' We have received statistics relating to the trade and commerce of New Zealand for the year .1865, and with respect to the shipping of the colony, the following shows the number, tonnage, and crews of registered vessels belonging to ports in New Zealand on December 31, 1865 — Vessels Tonnage. Crews. Auckland ... 300 13.094 947 Dunedin . ... 69 4,906 344 Lyttelton ... 67 3.933 252 Wellington. ... 20 1.880 170 Nelson * ... 15 498 69 Napier ... 5 168 15 Totals ... 466 24.484 1.797 It thus appears that Auckland owns nearly twice as many vessels as all the other ports of the colony put together, the tonnage of which is as la to 11, and the crews as nine to eight of the total of all other ports of the colony. If coming events cast their shadows before, Auckland is to be the greatest shipping port in New Zealand, while the Southern provinces will beat us in sheep and wool.
