FLOOD AT EDENDALE.

RESULT OF RECENT RAIN.

WATER FAILS TO drainAWAY.

TENANTS VACATE HOUSES

Somewhat serious floods were caused hv the recent torrential rains on the low-lving ground in the Edendale district, and the inundation not having subsided, several residents in the locality have been compelled to vacate the houses tenanted by them Although the flood waters did not actually find their wav into the houses concerned, which are erected upon foundation? raised some 3ft to 4ft from the level of the ground, the gradual clcsing-in of the. water, which in some instances was 3ft deep, necessitated the removal of the inmates, as only at considerable difficulty could either ingress or egress to their homes be obtained. The worst sufferers were residents in Parrish and Edendale Roads, Elizabeth Street and Leslie Avenue, no fewer than sis tenants having to vacate their houses ui these streets. In Parrish Road the end converging on New Edendale Road, is flooded to a depth of 2ft. An indication of the extent of the flood waters is affoided by a piece of land, situated in the New Edendale Road, known as Old Cabbage Tree Swamp. Last year this piece of swamp land was dried up, while at the present time it is estimated | that the waters are 10ft deep in places. j The cause of the slowness of the subsidence of the flood waters is attributed to insufficient drainage, and, as an illustration, it is pointed out that the Kingsland Cricket Ground, which is situated about half a, mile distant Irom Edendale, but upon approximately the same level, used to be flooded in a similar manner. After the last flooding, however, the authorities installed more drainage, with the result that, although practically under water at one time during the recent torrential rains, the ground is at present quite free from flood waters.
