ANNEXATION CONTROVERSY RAGING IN GERMANY.
NEWSPAPERS DISCUSSING THE PROSPECTS OF PEACE. United Son-ice. LONDON. July 17.
Berlin newspapers are divided as to the wisdom of the opposition shown by the German Chancellor to the annexation of Belgium. The Cologne Gazette defends Dr. von Bethmann-Hollweg, asserting that it would be a mistake to swap horses in the middle of the stream. It acknowledges the huge British reserves in Flanders, enabling continuous attacks with fresh troops. Count Reventlow, the noted naval writer, considers the Chancellor's policy unwise, as the allies will interpret it as a sign of German weakening. The newspapers are discussing the possibility of peace following the aJlies' offensive. The Berlin newspaper Tageblatt expresses the opinion that the allies will now endeavour to induce Greece and Roumania to participate in the war.
