GERMAN STORY OF THE WESTERN FIGHTING.
EXTENSIVE FRENCH ATTACKS AT VERDUN. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 10 p.m.) LONDON. July 17. A German communique states: —" The English at many points between fhe sea and the Ancre increased their fire to great violence. The artillery activity in the Somme region has been very considerable on both sides. The enemy's local attacks resulted in the English penetrating Ovillers Wood and led to lively fighting south of Biaches, but otherwise failed before our curtain fire. "Extensive French attacks commenced on the 15th inst. east of the Meuse and continued until this morning. The enemy did not achieve success in the sanguinary struggle, but lost ground at a few points."
