PAINTERS' DISPUTE.

MINOR POINTS settled. A partial settlement was reached in the Auckland painters' dispute before a Conciliation Council yesterday. The comm:»sioner, .Mr. T. Harle Uil«, presided. The assessors for the employers were Messrs. Philip T. Birch, James Tapper, and M. J, Bennett, and for the union Messrs. R. J. Sharrock, H. Campbell, and T. McLaughlin. Mr. S. E. Wright appeared for the employers, and the union was represented by Mr. R. F. Way. " . An agreement was arrived at on all points other than those relating to preference and wages. The latter at the present time are la 4Jd per hour for journeymen. These clauses have therefore been passed on to the Arbitration Court for adjudication. A new clause relating to suburban work was agreed upon as follows :—Suburban work means work performed by a journeyman or an apprentice at a distance of over two miles from the employer's place of business, but which does not came fwithin the definition of country work. Journeymen or apprentices employed upon such work shall be paid, in addition to their ordinary wagessuch wages to begin after the radius of two miles has been covered —6d pgr day up to five miles, and Is per day from five miles up to the limit of suburban work; or the employer may convey the worker free of charge to and i from such work, the worker to be at the j employer's place of business when conveyance is provided not later than 7.30 &.m." On the motion of Mr. R. T. Wav, representing the union, seconded by Mr. P. T. Birch, for the employers, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the commissioner for the part he had taken in the proceedings.
