Although the children of the I school had had only a few days in which Ito prepare for the crowning of their j Carnival Queen, they went through the ■ ceremony in a way that reflected great credit on both teachers and pupils. The carnival added the sum of £46 to the Belgian Fund, the competing queens being the Queen of the Army, Queen of the ; Navy, Queen of the Submarines, and Queen of Flight. Miss Doris Baker. Queen of the Army, a tiny girl of six years, was the successful candidate, winning no fewer than 6000 votes. The robes were all carried out in the Belgian colours, while the " overseas visitors" and 1 representatives of the allies" were also attractively garbed. Mr. Ferguson performed the crowning ceremony, and afterwards made a short speech, thanking Mr Ellis, headmaster of the school, the people u ~ Lynn, and the teachers and pupils who had worked so well on behalf of the | elcrian children. The afternoon con- ! eluded with a short concert, the children .contributing a number of songs, piano solos, and recitations. The sum of £25 was raised vesterdav for the fund by the children of the Sacred Heart Convent school. Vermont Street, Ponsonby. The children furnished a number of stalls with goods, Heine assisted by the Sisters of Mercy. There was a large gathering of parents and friends at the sale, the parish priest.
