TAXING OF WAR PROFITS.
PATRIOTIC DONATIONS. DEMAND FOR EXEMPTION. [BY TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. In the course of the debate on the Land and Income Tax Bill this evening, Mr. W. T. Jennings (Taumanmui) made further reference to the question of exemption of contributions to patriotic funds from taxation. He said that death duties were not levied on money given for philanthropic purposes, and he thought there should be similar exemption in the case of patriotic donations. Mr. G. V. Pearce (Patea) said that people who gave money did not want it returned. Mr. Jennings: No one is asking for it to be returned. Mr. Pearce said some people had considered it their duty to give the whole of their war profits to patriotic purposes. He ©greed that it would be unfair if such people were called upon to pay 45 per cent, of these profits as a war tax.
