ALIENS IN THE NORTH.
PROPOSED SEGREGATION. FURTHER SLAV PROTEST. iBT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Dargavtllj:, Thursday. Considerable interest continues to centre in the mandate of the Government to intern all single Austrian gumdiggers at Parengarenga. Mr. John Totich, president of the Dargaville branch of the Slavonian Society, has sent a telegram to the Prime Minister, in which he asks whether the Government's decision embodied the segregation of approved members of the Jugo-Slav London Society, and especially of those who in the national registration signified their willingness to serve the British Empire in any capacity. The message goes on : " We, as a loyal body, bitterly resent being classed as enemies of your Government or of the allied cause. Our loyalty we have proved and are always trying to prove, to the British people among whom we are domiciled. If there is any proof that we are disloyal and a menace to the British public, wo thould be considered as enemies and dealt with accordingly. If we are not disloyal, we protest against being handed over 'to an individual or a. capitalistic combination." This morning Mr. A. E. Harding received a telegram from Mr. J. G. Coates, M.P. for Kaipara, assuring him that proper inquiry will be made before definite action is taken. Mr. Totich also wired a protest to the Governor, and thjs evening received a reply stating that His Excellency had forwarded a copy to his responsible advisers.
