Tho Duke of Devonshire lias been appointed Governor-General of Canada. The Duke of Devonshire is the head of an old and powerful family, a wealthy territorial magnate and an Englishman with thoroughly national tastes lor sport. Ho succeeded his uncle, who seceded from the Liberal Party over the Home Ilulo issue, and was a prominent Unionist in 1908. He had been Unionist member for West Derbyshire since 1891 and was treasurer of the household from 1900 to 1903, Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 1903 to 1905 and is at present a Civil Lord of the Admiralty. The Duke of Devonshire was born in 1868 and married a daughter of the Marquis of Lansdowne. He owns about 186,000 acres in Derbyshire and Lancashire.
