In 1851"the European population of New Zealand was 26,707, and in 1864 it was 172,158, or an average increase of 11,188 persons in each year. The total number of houses in the colony in 1864 was 37,996, being' an increase of 15,598 in the preceding three years. It appears that 33.95 per rent, of the population are English. 11.8 Irish, and 17.98 Scotch ; that 42.47 per ••ent. belong to tho Church of England, 24.43 to the Presbyterian Church, 12.49 in the Roman Catholics, and 7.26 per cent, to the Wesleyan Methodists. The number of acr«is of land fenced in 1851 was 30,470; in 1861, 409,763; and in 1864 it had reached 1.072.383. Under crop in 1864 there were 382,655 acres. I lie number of horses in 1851 was 2890. and in 1864 49,409. The number of cattle was in the former year 35,787 head, and in the latter 249,760, whilo that of sheep in 1857 was 233,043, and in 1864 no less than 4,937,273. The increase in sheep from 1861 to 1864, a period of three years, was 2.175.890.
