"GERMANY CANNOT WIN."

SIR. W. A. BEDDOE'S LECTURE.

In* the course of his lecture on "Can; Germany Win" at the Grafton library last night, Mr. W. A. Beddcm, Canadian Trade Commissioner, adduced what he considered to be many good reason's why the aL.es should prove victorious in the war. The lecturer traced in an interesting manner the various causes leading up to the war, and said that if by any chance ; Germany could win, then there was no, virtue in morality, which was the real basis of the conflict. The distinguishing difference between German and British national .morality and ideals was that in Germany honour counted for nothing. Britain's honour was bound by the pledge she gave to Belgium. He pictured what mighti have happened if Germany had been given her way, and spoke of the good work accomplished in the war by the New Zealand and other Dominion troops, the men of which he regarded as equal, if not better, than the Germans, man to man.

Mr. Beddoe went on to say that Germany had not, by far, accomplished thq task on which she embarked, and that was another good reason why she could not win the war. She set out to smash France, hurl Russia back, and cripple Britain, and had failed, despite many advantages of long preparation, to do either. In the air, also, the machines of the allies were playing with the Germans on equal, if not superior, terms. He pointed to Britain's supremacy on tha sea, and said New Zealand and the other Dominions enjoyed peace and happiness owing to Britannia ruling the waves. He did not think Germany could win either on land or sea.
