GERMAN DESTROYER BASE
SAID FROM ZEEBRUGGE.
CAPTURE OF THE BRUSSELS
LONDON. JUKE 25.
The Great Eastern Railway Company's mail steamer Brussels, a vessel of 1380 tons, which has been captured by German destroyers and taken to Zeebrugge, left Rotterdam on Thursday laden with foodstuffs. Her passengers were mostly Belgian refugees. . Six destroyers captured her.
Nine previous attempts were made to capture the Brussels. Her escape was due on each "occasion to her superior speed. Since the outbreak of war torpedo boats have been constantly hunting the steamers which ply between Harwich and the Continent. *♦ Spies were on the alert, {riving information as to sailing times of -cargo and passenger steamers.""
The German fleet at Zeebrugge has been reinforced, and now includes 22 destroyers, several being of the new type, with three funnels. The destroyers, when raiding, are accompanied by reconnoitring seaplanes, ' mine-layers, and armed trawlers.
