GERMANS UNABLE TO TAKE OFFENSIVE FARTHER NORTH
RUSSIAN ARTILLERY KEEPS THEM TO THEIR TRENCHES
STRONG RUSSIAN ATTACKS NORTH OF BARANOVITCH.
(Received June 18. 7 p.m.) LONDON. JUNE 17. Russian artillery in the Dvinsk region prevented the enemy taking the offensive in several sectors.
COPENHAGEN, JUNE 16.
German newspapers state that the Russians, after a three hours' bombardment, destroyed strong Austro-German lines north of Baranovitch, on the north side of the Pripet marshes, 100 miles south of Vilna. Fifty thousand Russians attacked, but, advancing too far, were compelled to fall back two miles. The newspapers add that the Austrians and Germans, now strongly reinforced, have taken up new positions Swiss correspondents at the Austrian headquarters report that the fighting north of Baranovitch has developed unparalleled severity.
