RESIDENT OF WANGANUI
An old and respected citizen of Wanganui, in the person of • Mr. Andrew Thomson, died at his residence a few days ago. The deceased, who was nearly 80 years of age, has been identified with the educationa l life of the Wellington Province since his arrival in-New Zealand from Scotland in 1850.- During the troublous times following on the Te Kooti massacre at Poverty Bay he had charge of a school at Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, and, with his wife and several young children, was exposed to very great danger. At a later stage in the Maori war, Mr. Thomson was school teaching at Turakina, where again he was subjected to alarms and rumours of native night raids. A few years later Mr. Thomson established an educational seminary at Wanganui, the pupils of that institution including in their number Mr. Justice Sim, of the New Zealand • Supreme Court Bench, and Mr. D.
