STORY OF FRENCH RESISTANCE AT VAUX.
INCONCEIVABLE VIOLENCE OF THE BOMBARDMENT. TRENCH FILLED WITH GERMAN BODIES. (Received June 11, 7 p.m.) PARIS. JUNE 10. A Chasseur, who was wounded at Fort Vaux, relates that th© violence of the bombardment was inconceivable, at least 48 11 in and 12in guns rained shells at the rate of three' a minute. When th© enemy made an infantry attack the French machine-guns suddenly opened, and heaps of bodies rolled down the glacis. The living were carried away with the dead. The fight stopped at noon as the trench was filled with German bodies. Major Raynal, the French commander, finding that relief was impossible, decided to evacuate the wounded. There was a pathetic parting. He kissed th© wounded, and all the garrison said that they would fight as long as a single man remained. The Crown Prince permitted Major Raynal to retain his sword.
