CITY FISH SUPPLY.

CLEANING BEFORE ARRIVAL. OBJECTION TO PROPOSAL. The impracticability of the provision which it is proposed to insert in the new city by-laws regulating the sale of fish in the city and the management of the municipal fish market, that all fish, with the exception of mullet and cod, must be cleaned before they are- put ashore, was pointed out in a letter received at a meeting of the City Council last night, from Messrs. Sanford, Limited. They stated that the by-law would not be practicable o.i the following grounds:—(l) It would make the fish dearer to the people, as tlio consumer would pay for the additional cost of cleaning; (2) it was impossible to gut fish on deck in bad weather at anything like the rate of doing it ashore, and in many cases the vessel would have to take shelter to get it done; (3) under the present method the fash were put into ice in insulated holds, immediately they were caught, and they arrived quite as fresh as if only a few minutes out of the water. Mr. A- J. Entrican, Deputy-Mayor, moved that the letter be referred to the Public Services Committee. Mr. E. Davis said the point raised in the letter was an important matter of policy, and be suggested that the committee call evidence in regard to it. Mr- Entrican said the regulations would probably bo placed before the council at its next meeting and councillors would have ample opportunity of discussing the proposal. If Messrs. Sanford wished they could bring evidence before the committee. It was not the policy of the council to needlessly harass any section of the community. At the same time it lay with the council to see that the business was carried on in a proper way. The motion wag carried.
