BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.

The Birkenhead Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor, Mr- J. P. McPhail, and Messrs. C. E. Campbell, W. Sampson, J. Leonard, A. Hadfield, F. J. Stewart, E. 6. Skeates, R. Webb, and C. Mason.

With regard to the proposal emanating from the Marine Boroughs' Association to form a water board with considerably enlarged powers than the present board of control, including provision for taking over the pumping plants, ft was decided to defer consideration of the matter until tho Lake Takapuna Board of Control had time to submit a definite scheme for the augmentation of the water supply for the North Shore boroughs. The secretary of the New Zealand Municipal Association intimated that the conference of delegates would not be held this session, and that the conference had been postponed until next year. It was decided to ask the Lands Department to vest an area of 48 acres at Kauri Point in the council as a Domain Board, and to point out that no objection would be taken to the Government appointing a representative on the proposed board.

Mr. Skeatea was appointed delegate to the conference promoted by the Newmarket Council relative to framing uniform traffic by-laws. Mr. F. E. Powell, who supervised the main road reconstruction works, reported that the formation work was completed, and the metalling and blinding was nearly finished. There was 110 question as to the improvement effected •to the long stretch of road. , The Northcote Council agreed to confer on the question of the lighting of the districts bv electricity. The Motor-'bus Co. submitted a new scale of fares, which had been raised on account of the increased cost of benzine and other requirements and large expense 011 tyres, etc.
