ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY.
MAN AWAITING SENTENCE.
HAMILTON LOCK-UP BROKEN.
[BT TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] 'Hamilton, Tuesday. A young man named Charles Henry Roxborough, alias Ewan, who was to come up for sentence at the Supreme Court tomorrow, on two charges of house-break-ing and one of theft from a dwelling, and one of theft, escaped from custody to-day. He was brought up from Auckland to-day under escort and lodged in the lock-up, wherein also was a military prisoner, about 1.30. The latter.was taken out by the military authorities at 3 p.m., when Roxborough was safe, as he also was about 4 p.m., when he was visited by SeniorSergeant Cassells. On a further visit about 5 p.m., in the midst of a severe thunderstorm, it was discovered that Roxborough had escaped. In the hot weather it is the custom of the police authorities to give prisoners access to the passage in the lock-up, which has a barred window at one end. It was found that this was the means of the prisoner's exit, bars having been kicked out from the rotten woodwork, and the window opened. So far Roxborough has not been arrested. The escapee is 25 years of age, sft Bin in height, of fair complexion, clean shaven, well dressed in a brown suit of smart appearance, wearing black shoes, and minus braces, hat, collar, and tie.
