TWO DEATHS REPORTED.

Sixteen more cases of infantile paralysis were reported yesterday, ono coming from the city area and 15 from the country. When asked for an expression of opinion concerning the sudden increase in the number of cases in the country, Dr. Hughes, district health officer, stated that, properly speaking, not all the cases notified yesterday from tho country areas were new cases. Eight at least were several days old, and the official notification had only just reached him. One of the cases had been verbally notified as far back as February 16. Therefore the position of affairs was not so bad as appeared on tho surface He pointed out that since the rain fell just over a week ago the Department's records showed that the temperature had not decreased. The total number of cases reported up ■to the present date is 383, comprising 215 in the rural districts and 168 in the city and suburbs. Two further deaths were reported yesterday, bringing the total fatal cases to date to 36. Both the most recent victims lived in the country, one being a woman aged 30, residing at Thames and the other a one-year-old female child living at Pukekohe.

TWO OASES AT WANGAHUI. BOTH YOUNG INFANTS. Cbt telegbavh.— association.] WaNGJOTI, Tuesday. Two infants, one twelve months old and the other 18 months old, were reported as suffering from infantile paralysis in the borough to-day. IN WELLINGTON DISTRICT. SEVEN ADDITIONAL CASES. [bt. telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Tuesday. Additional cases of infantile paralysis reported in the Wellington health district comprise two at Gisborae and one each at Wanganui, Eltham, Patea, Palmerston North, and Waipukurau. No further cases were notified in Wellington 'City or the immediate neighbourhood. All the patients are children two years of age. Dr. Smith, district health officer, left for Taranaki today, tb investigate cases in that district.
