BISHOP GRIMES' ESTATE

LEGACY TO SUCCESSOR.

CONSECRATION OF MONSIGNOR

BRODIE.

MANY PRELATES TO ATTEND.

At a meeting of the Executive Committee held in Christ-church last week in connection with the reception of His Excellency Archbishop Cerretti. Apostolic Delegate, the Rev. Chancellor Price announced that Monsignor —bishop-elect—had decided to devote the bequest made to his successor by the late Bishop Grimes to the fund for the extinguishing of the debt on the cathedral. Bishop Grimes's estate was sworn at £11.000. Estate duty and requests niado the residue about £8000 which was to be divided between the superior of the Marist Order, to which the late bishop belonged, and his successor in the Christchurch See. From this it had been agreed that £1700 for th« new high altar for the cathedral, together with the mosaic pavement of the sanctuary, should be paid. The residue would then go to the two beneficiaries named, and Moiaignor Brodie was going to give the whole of his legacy to the reduction of the cathedral debt,, now standing at £4850, thus very materially reducing it. The meeting considered that after the consecration of Bishop Brodie on Sunday, February 27, there should be presented to him, at a conversazione, a purse representing the goodwill of the people of the diocese, and it was resolved to submit the matter to the assembled clergy who will be in Christ-church for the retreat and through them to the laity of the various parishes. A considerable gathering of distinguished prelates is expected at the consecration. Already Archbishop Can-, of Melbourne, Bishop Phelan, of Sale. Bishop Rev ell, of Sandhurst, and Dr. Ormond, secretary to the Apostolic Delegate, are in the North Island.
