AVALANCHE OF RUSSIAN SHELLS IN BUKOVINA.
800,000 MEN ANT) 3500 GUNS ENGAGED. REINFORCEMENTS HURRIEDLY SENT TO THE AUSTRIANS.' (Received January 10, 11 p.m.) London, January 9. A Russian communique states : " We captured 1200 prisoners northeast of Czernowitz, the capital of Bukovina." There are 800,000 Russians with 3500 guns engaged in the Bukovina operations. The Austrian casualties for the week were 100,000. Reinforcements are hurrying from the Balkans, the Isonzo front, and from inland garrisons. The battle raging in Bukovina is the fiercest that has been fought in this region since the war started. German prisoners declare that the Russian cannonade was worse than the bombardment of the allies on the Western front in September. Certainly Russia has never before poured out such a furious avalanche of shells.
