BULGARIAN ATTACKS ON THE ALLIES FAIL.
FRENCH AND BRITISH REPULSE THE ENEMY. ALLIED COUNTER-ATTACKS GAIN GROUND. London, December 8. The Bulgarians attacked the French at the bridgehead at Demir Kapu, on the River Vardar, in Servia, on Sunday afternoon, but were completely repulsed. On Monday the Bulgarians bombarded the entire British line at Strumnitza all day. Infantry attacks followed, but were easily repulsed. Fighting was resumed on Tuesday, when German cavalry appeared at Strumnitza. Latest reports state that the allies counter-attacked at Valanaovi, Doiran and Gjeugelu, driving back the Bulgarians. The allies" heavy artillery inflicted considerable losses. The weather in Southern Servia has improved. A Bulgarian communique states: "The French troops arc retreating on both banks of %he Vardar." Demir Kapa /Turkish "Iron gate") is a gorge on the Vardar River, 62 miles from Salonika. Valanaovi, Doiran and Gjeugelu are all towns in the south-east corner of Servia, the two first-mentioned being east of tho railway and Gjeugelu on the line.
