THE NIKAU PALMS.

Sir,l am pleased that an abler pen than mine has taken up the cause of the slaughter of the beautiful New Zealand nikan palm, and I am sure there are many old colonists in this fair land who are grateful to Mr. Clement Wragge for his public expression of regret at the loss of these plants. I noticed a number of these graceful palms in Queen Street during carnival —not the branches merely, but the whole tree ruthlessly cut down to make a shoir for a few hours' pleasure. No doubt a number of these palms must be sacrificed with the advance of settlement, but there is no reason why they should be destroyed for ornament. Okas. E. Dacre.
